CHAPTER SEVEN: Ee-an

Thomas pulled the fingers of one hand through his hair, tugging lightly when he reached the ends. His eyes still shone, diamond drops of moisture clinging to his lashes. He blinked at me, a little frown puckering his brow after a moment. Realizing he didn’t want to admit he’d been so affected, I pulled him close so he could hide his face in my neck. His slender body curved into mine. I was loath to disturb the fragile peace between us.

“I am not from here, Thomas.”

He pulled back slightly, looking as though I were speaking elvish or some equally outlandish language, and then laughed up at me. “Of course you aren’t. Are you from eastern Europe?”

I shook my head, placing a finger over his lips when he tried to speak again. His amber eyes darkened and another small frown flitted across his face. I smoothed a thumb across his brow, soothing myself with the silken touch of his skin against mine.

“Thomas, have you ever watched Torchwood?”

He blinked. His mouth dropped open, and his slick pink tongue slid out to wet his bottom lip.

“Okay, that was random. What does Torchwood have to do with anything?”

Thomas’s hand crept up, and he started to toy with the hair at the back of my neck. I needed to finish the explanation quickly. His other hand lay folded against his chest, but if he chanced to bring both hands into the endeavor of caressing my body I wouldn’t even remember my own name. Every time he touched me I wanted nothing more than to bury myself in his perfect little body and stay there as long as I could.

“I—the part where Gwen asks if you’ve ever seen anything so mad you realize that anything at all might be possible?”

“Um, pretty sure you’re misquoting there, but yeah, I do watch the show—ah, hello it stars John Barrowman who is like, the mecca of gay hotness—and yeah, I know the bit you’re talking about.”

I took a deep breath. With my heart beating so hard I thought seriously that it was about to jump right up into my throat I met his eyes.

“Have you, Thomas? Have you ever seen anything that mad?”

Thomas wiggled back from me.

“How do you mean, Ee-an?”

His voice had gone tight and husky, but not in a sexy let’s-get-naked-and-fuck kind of way. No, this was all please-don’t-carve-me-up-and-eat-me-with-fava-beans. What was that human phrase? Oh, yeah. I was so fucked. I needed to get him un-scared immediately. Thomas sounding frightened of me shot pangs of jagged fire through my chest.

“Oh. Thomas. Don’t look like that. I’m not crazy or dangerous… I would die to keep you safe—and that includes from me!”

His eyes managed, somehow, to get wider, and I swear I could taste the pheromones of sheer terror in the air between us.

“Um… wrong thing to say, huh? I’m not a… what is that word… stalker and—oh, dammit, Thomas, I’m Fae. I’m from the other side of the veil.”

Laughter rolled from his lips, rich as hot caramel sauce.
